LAND OF FIRE
Patrick & Colleen recently visited the three ancient and exotic countries south of the Caucasus mountains. Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia were until 1991 part of the Soviet Union and off-limits to foreigners. Each country has a unique culture and a fascinating history but are little known due to their secret life behind the Iron Curtain. Azerbaijan is one of the world’s largest oil producers (a hundred years ago almost all of the world’s oil came from Azerbaijan). The population is Shia Muslim. Georgia was recently invaded by Russia and a third of the country is still under Russian occupation. It is very poor and its main source of income is tourism from Russia! Georgians follow the Orthodox faith. Armenia was the first Christian country in the world. The symbol of Armenia is Mount Ararat (where Moses landed after the flood) which is temporarily not in Armenia. Armenia is Apostolic and whilst Patrick & Colleen were there, Pope Francis came to do homage to Armenia.
Patrick will describe where they went, what they saw and, most importantly, what they ate.
